If you’ve followed my blog from the beginning (which, granted … wasn’t that long ago), you know that last summer, I did a Whole30. And then I never filled you in on how it went. Its been busy! Between my day job, our family trip to Disneyland in the fall to celebrate Little Bean’s adoption, and then the holidays, we’ve had a lot going on! I kept meaning to get back to the blog and write up a recap, but sometimes my perfectionistic tendencies slow the process, and so instead of publishing an imperfect piece, I publish nothing at all. (I’m working on that.)
So back to the Whole30. You can read about it here. In a nutshell, it was hard, but WORTH IT. My skin cleared up almost immediately. I gained a tremendous amount of energy, confidence, resilience, mental clarity, and so much more. I also lost ~10 pounds (which, admittedly, was a motivating factor, even if its not supposed to be the primary reason for doing a Whole30). I would love to be able to tell you that I finished the first round of Whole30 and have continued the lifestyle ever since, and that life is beautiful as a result. But I’m honest if nothing else, and because of that, I’m going to tell you that between October and December, life got in the way, and I might have backslidden a bit on the solid eating habits that I’d worked so hard on just a couple of months prior. Not as bad as maybe a year ago, but still not where I want to be. So why, after working so hard to clean up my act and reboot my body and mind with a program as strict as Whole30, and after seeing such awesome results, would I go back to eating and drinking things that drain my energy, make my tummy rumbly and my clothing more snug, make me sleep like crap, and ramp up my anxiety? That is the million dollar question. And also why I’m currently working on my second round of this!
The second round is actually going really well. Better even than the first! It is still a lot of work, but it feels do-able, and I’m really enjoying my food much more. I won’t get into all of the nuts and bolts of what I eat, because honestly, the biggest reason that I’m doing it again, and so soon after my first round, has nothing to do with that.
“What?! Then why are you doing this?!”
Glad you asked. I’m doing this again so soon because I need this right now. I definitely learned a lot from the first time around, but after years of bad habits, you can’t just correct everything in one month’s time. Lots for me has changed, but I am a work in progress. So, my hope is that this round of Whole30 will be the last one that I need for quite some time. Its not realistic to live and eat Whole30 every day of your life. In fact, the creators of the program do not even recommend that! My goal is to get to a place where instead of living Whole30 or living completely off the rails, I am able to find a happy medium in which I:
– eat Whole30 a lot/most of the time,
– am mindful of the foods that are most disruptive to my system,
– consciously allow myself to discover which foods might be “worth it” to eat in small doses, even if they are not the most optimal nutritional choices, and
– consciously remember which foods are “not worth it,” and seek to avoid the life disruption that they cause.
This is not to say that there won’t be slip ups, and times when I enjoy my “not worth its” in excess even. But rather than going off the rails and staying stuck, I am striving to get to a place in which I can quickly reset and get back to the above bullet-pointed plan.
I think I am close. But I have some work left to do. It is an exciting journey and I look forward to continuing to see it unfold. I will keep you posted on my path to Food Freedom Forever.
